I have not posted in a while because I moved around the world. Yes literally, I'm now in a timezone 13 hours from my previous. This move has not been easy and I was reluctant to do it. But here we are. Now it's about survivng, adapting, thriving. Which is doubtful right now. These kind of challenges are highly emotional and bring out underlying issues.
So why did I do it? Simply, I wanted to get out of the boat. I wanted to walk on the waves. Secondly, I wanted to change the story of the rich young ruler. I didn't want to look back on my life and know that when told what I needed to be perfect, I went away sad. No I literally gave most everything away and gave up my life for this purpose.
And it's kicking my butt. Work is pointless. I get paid well to do basically nothing and am treated politley as if I'm in the way most of the time or given zilly llittle things just so I don't totally do nothing. Sounds good? Yeah, try it awhile. Nowhere to hang your hat. Nothing to get up for in the morning. Then there's family. We are much more in each others' space here and I am so far the only one with a schedule to force me out. So when I get home there's two bored people starving for attention I don't have to give. Problems to solve, fears to assuage. My teen is the worst. Needier than when an infant, fully capable of stepping out more, but too scared to do it. And when I push him out of the nest she flies into a rage at me.
Then there's the worst part, our apartment, provided by my employer in an old wooden structure with upstairs neighbors that are extremely loud on the floor, like hours of pounding, dropping, falling. I don't even really know if they are that loud in terms of decibels. Objective evidence is hard to get, but in any case, I find myself getting more and more agitated as it goes on. Some noises send me over the edge and I break something or scream, or collapse into full panic attack. I shake, sweat, heart pounds. I thought I might have some latent PTSD. But the I read about misophonia, which is a neurological condition that causes these same reactions. Just perfect. Another rare and unheard of illness to confirm, cope with, and explain for the rest of my life. But it matches my history. I have always been very sensitive to overhead house noises and bass through walls. Like, if a neighbor has a stereo on, I have paced the floor for hours fighting the urge to go beat their door in and destroy the infernal machine. Now I'm trapped inside the machine and I can't take it.
I have started counseling and the therapist is recommending a psychiatrist...good luck way out here on the edge of the world. I talked to my employer and for cultural reasons I completely don't understand we can't get the people to be quiet. Though they may not physically be Bable to be quiet enough if I really do have a condition. So their idea to move us to a free standing quiet house is probably best. God, I'm hoping.
I even asked them if it would be easier just to let me go and I'd go home. But they didn't want to do that. We have a lead on a house, so please soon!
I don't know what I'm doing. I can't analyze or fix myself and I need lots of help to live here. I can completely understand why Peter feared and began to sink. I'm going down fast and can only say, "Lord, help me". You see there's no solid ground out here. It isn't all bad. There are points of grace and light, even some angels that don't know it. But this is hard to do.

Fear
What is fear? We all feel it, but what is it? A feeling? More than a feeling, it can have physical manifestations that grow beyond what we can control. We have a hard time getting rid of it, so we avoid it, disguise it, find ways to convince ourselves it isn't fear.
Fear has to do with threat. This can be very credible, but most often is not. We perceive a threat rather than register a real one. Is it possible to live without fear? Many would say no. But I believe it's possible.
Fear has to do with perception, and threat. Perception is easily altered. Threat can only be dispelled in terms of consequence. If the threat is empty, it ceases to be a threat. What consequences? Pain of some kind and death. These are really the only two.
Death is not a fear for me. It truly isn't. I know that in death I will move beyond hurt. I will find peace. For long reasons I don't want to argue right now I am convinced of this. And if I'm wrong the only other possibility is that I cease to exist...which still places me beyond the reach of harm. If there is no life beyond death, then what's the point anyway. So no fear there.
But pain is more difficult. Physical pain can be intense prior to death. Emotional and mental pain can be debilitating. Yes, pain is what I fear at the root of all fears.
I need a way to lift above or beyond pain. I can't do this in myself. But God promises I will not be given more than I can bear. He says he keeps the steadfast in peace. He says he works for my good. The problem is if I believe it.
Yes, the root of fear is distrust. Can I trust God to lead me? Can I trust him to help me avoid pain? Do I need to experience pain so I can cease to fear it? Do I need to experience a place where my perception of safety and control are obliterated so I can trust more?
Why can I dive into the ocean, climb a mountain, run through the wilderness fearing nothing, but can't shake my trepidation at what lies ahead? Is this fear or prescient warning? If I'm wrong what happens? Something for my good. If I'm right what happens? Something good. Can I trust this? I want to trust this. I want to see it more than anything. I want to walk on the water. I want to tred the storm, face the lions, the flames, the giants with no fear.
God can I do this? Please give me a sign and the ability to understand it. Knock me on my butt with it because I'm dense. I want you. I don't want to fail. I'm about to free fall and God I hope you're there again.

Grown
I think I am being grown. I feel stretched. It's not terrible, but not great either. Many things are changing. I had dreams about dragons again, which seem to precede big changes for me that require growth. I also had deja vu today, which is another sign that something is happening.
I don't mean this in the way the words might sound to many people. It's not some spooky or flighty thing where I think of these things as special powers or whatever. I don't even know if it's real. But I know my experience. And dragons are sometimes a symbol of wisdom and reptiles can indicate change in dreams.
The deja vu is just a distinct impression that I've done something before. I don't know if I dreamed it in advance, or maybe it's just a feeling that occurs when I'm in a state of confusion and growth.
But it doesn't really matter, does it? The point is the significance to me. They are markers of something I should pay attention to.
Changes are immanent in work and life, and I've noticed a tendency toward less control and more dependence on God, which comes in the form of independence from other things. Hence it feels good and bad at the same time.
This may be an answer to prayer...in reality everything is an answer to prayer, isn't it though. In this case, I did pray for God to move me and for him to teach me to trust him more. So here goes.
The cool thing to me is that I am not so nervous as I once would have been about things like this. I'm hoping to find out if Uncle George's ideas that we have to move to see the results are true. That only in obedience to the requirements can we see the results, the lack of which we claim as disproof.
He also said that when we ask of God and it seems like no answer, it may be that God has answered immediately, but it is taking time, maybe years, for us to grow to the point that we can understand the answer. This seems consistent with my understanding of God. He would rather have us right and thoroughly good and so would not give us a half answer or no answer, as we sometimes think, but rather immediately begins the process of growing us, finishing us, to the point that we can hear. And hearing, can understand what he says. But we are not going unanswered.
To me, this is powerful. I always thought that we might be ignored for our own good sometimes, like a good parent will ignore their petulant child until they relent. But what if it isn't that at all?! What if God is a better parent than us? ...as if there is any question. Of course he'd be better. Necessarily better. To understand that way is to confirm my infantile perspective.
Or perhaps, I would think, we just couldn't understand so he doesn't explain, like a parent who resorts to, "because I said so." to the whining kid that won't accept the answer.
Or perhaps that's it: that we are just whining so he won't answer.
But just imagine instead, what it would mean to have a God who answers so immediately and powerfully that he would grow and shape a whole world of space and matter and experience around us in order that our hearing would begin developing to the point that we could first hear the answer and then our minds would be capable of understanding it.
It's supra-language, dark cloud, behind the veil stuff.
The thoughts are coming too fast now for my fingers to keep up. So I have to stop.

How to make a liar
I haven't posted in a while. I tried but couldn't. I've been through one of the worst dark periods I've had ever. I don't want to go into it, but it's been rough. I'm doing better now.
I don't know what the purpose of it is, but it has revealed my weakness, my baseness, my violence, and my selfishness. Maybe that is the purpose. I just know it is not fun and not pretty. It's also not made up and I can't help it. If you've never been there, you won't understand and that's ok. Don't seek it.
I have said it before, but it is clearer to me than ever that whatever is good in me is not from me. I know you'll deny that and think it's just the darkness talking, and that's fine. I hope you never see that side of me.
But I'm trying to keep seeing it. I don't want to live in it, but I don't want to forget it either. I tend toward hubris and self-confidence without it. Even the humility you think you know in me is a form of self-pride. I'm not kidding.
People lead the question all the time. Christians are the worst about it. What do you think will happen if you constantly keep telling people how to be? Anyone with half a brain will quickly learn how to pretend at it. Put on the actions and even self-deceive that they have achieved it. I've done it. I habitually do it. And you reward the better liars.
I have a ready bunch of scripts to throw up in any given situation. I watch carefully. I have fakes backstopping fakes and will say whatever works to get the reaction I need.
And what I really need is a safe place to let those things slowly fall off. People who are not impressed by it. People who want me to thoroughly be good rather than merely seem good. You condemn yourselves in me! And I condemn myself!
Understand me, I am not saying this from a place of despair. Quite the opposite. When I was despairing, I hid from you because then I can't keep up the masks, can't keep the demons in their chains. But right now I'm in that hazy space between the nightmare and the bright day and soon I'll be fully dressed and presentable again.God forbid!
I need a savior. I am fully reminded that if there is any hope for me it is in Jesus. Not knowledge about him, but in the real living him. I am not claiming to know grand mystical things. If I did, I doubt them now. He didn't even show up in some nonmiraculous way to rescue me. But I don't care. My heart leaps when I think about him, when I read about him. I understand the meaning of hoping in him. I didn't choose this. If I did it was rigged. I am not in control. So if he doesn't have me, if I do not eventually arrive in a place of peace and perfection and learn that he was there when I couldn't see it or know it, then I would rather rush headlong into the void now. It isn't about this world. It isn't about the surface things you spend so much time talking about as if we could just decide to be something else. Even if you can, I CAN'T! I don't know how. It doesn't work. Whether that's brain chemistry, spiritual sense, slavery, karma, grace, whatever you want to call it. What I can do is lie about it though!
You'd rather me be presentable, disfigure my feelings into acceptable packages, even though you THINK you want me to let it out. Which is the most insidious part! Your words say one thing and your actions say another in the same breath. Your words are a trap. A demon maw yawns behind your fair and hopeful words, you whitewashed tombs! Damn you satans in a hollow christ's image! I've never yet found anyone who really meant it when they say it's safe to let it out and let it go. Maybe one or two people come closer than others. But if I have ever let the depth of it peak out, people take pains...no give pains to shut it in again.
So keep teaching behaviors. Keep focusing on outwards before inwards. Keep modeling the plastic masks. Keep grinding out budding faith with your two faces. Keep making liars. I don't want to be one anymore.

Jesus Prayer
It's been a long time since I've blogged. This is because I've entered the busiest season for me. This one was made more busy by a certain conglomeration of circumstances: family, work, illness Not the least of which was surgery on myself.
But now I am back. I'm still in the throes of activity, but find a spare moment. Honestly, there's not much to tell, since I've been preoccupied there hasn't been much time for examination. Perhaps this is a good thing.
Two things I have noticed. One, I'm developing a fondness for Canada caused by a long spell of recovery in which I became fascinated with Canadian TV. While this is silly, it's worth noting since I previously viewed it as pretty much a frozen wilderness with a fringe of basically American culture. While obviously TV isn't a full or necessarily accurate picture, it is a window, and a careful observer (which I consider myself) can pick out elements that transcend the showbiz of even educational TV. This is what has led to the fondness.
The second thing of note is the Jesus Prayer. As usual, I won't quote it, go look it up (can't make it that easy; knowledge without even 30 seconds of effort is devoid of value.) It's basically one line, packed full of meaning, said repeatedly as a means of focusing our attention.
I've tried various forms of discipline in the past. They work for a bit, and then the newness wears off and they become hollow. Some people may find them more valuable, but for me they fade in favor of ever more real interaction. But lately, this prayer has been good. It has helped me stave off wandering thoughts, and quiet my mind. This is a big problem for someone like me whose mind wanders leagues afield and at the pace of an overstimulated ferret.
But most notable is that while I was prepping for surgery in which they would essentially hollow out my face from the inside...not a pretty prospect...I kept saying this prayer. It was easy enough to remember and pick right back up after an interruption. As I was being put under, it was my last thought...I wonder if it might have even become audible as I was fading. But then most astonishing to me was that it was my first thought upon regaining the slightest bit of consciousness. Almost as if it had been rolling through my subconscious mind the entire time.
Of course I can't say that to be the case as I was totally unaware of it. But I was happy to find that my thoughts were not of monkeys wildly gesticulating behind the nurses or other such half-dreamed impressions. Instead it was this one solid line of truth echoing through my reality. Even when I could least control my mind, this razor sharp prayer cut through and remained strong.
Thank God, and thank all the saints who crowd around me whispering this line from across the centuries.

I made it
I have recently been struck over and over again with how many of our problems are of our own making. We contrive some system or institution, which becomes so ingrained that we don't want to change from it and many can't imagine anything else. Then we see problems in it and begin to solve them by more contrivances. It's like putting sugar in tea and then inventing a machine to make the tea unsweet.
In another example, I have been wrestling for the past 6 months with a 96 page permit from one government agency to the agency I work for. The permit is to operate a storm sewer system. The permit stipulates 90 pages of things we have to do to ensure that the system doesn't pollute surface waters. We have to report back to the agency that issued it all the ways we are complying. So I have been going around to various departments in the agency I work for who don't in the least think about stormwater and trying to tell them they have to comply...which of course they ignore, so I have to figure out how the stuff they are already doing fits the very specific things the permit tells us to do. All the while not actually doing anything to prevent pollution from really getting in the water.
Why do we need the permit? Because the way we build storm sewers lets pollution get into waterways? Why do we need storm sewers? Because our cities and vehicles aren't built around the natural drainage. So where does the pollution come from? From the way we build the cities via the way we build the storm sewers. This problem was realized in the 1970's and many things have been cleaned up, so it isn't hopeless. But in this case we don't want to do anything different because it is hard to change the laws and rules about building which we created for ourselves. So instead we create permits that don't do anything but create paperwork and massive programs that pretend to comply with it. And when a rational group of people found out and recently sued the government for not actually cleaning up the pollution and won, the result was an even more complex permit requiring things that look like we're doing something without really having to which results in even more complex compliance programs to look like we are complying with the permit that wouldn't result in fixes even if we really did everything it asks for.
The crazy thing is we could sum up the entire body of law in one sentence: Keep the water clean. But enter the lawyers and they say how clean, what does clean mean, what does keep mean, endlessly trying to avoid simply doing what common sense tells us to do.
I recognize this is an over-simplification...but at the root, the problem is that the system is an over-complication. Be polite, share, keep things clean, don't hurt people even accidentally. Endlessly chasing pillow and plate is the way of the sinful world and that's bad enough. But we go so far beyond even just chasing those things.
So how do I get off this train? I think I have to own the problem first of all. Getting off is not so hard if I were not constantly over-complicating. Even the very device I'm using to type this
is part of that over-complication...and I have a free OS on a rock-bottom no-contract service. All I have to do is walk away like Francis. But I keep cutting away small things without just biting the bullet and letting it all go. Trying to find ways of edging toward the thing without actually having to go there. Fears, paradigms, lies, and temptations.

Fears, paradigms, lies, and temptations.

anxious
I finally finished the bathroom and have taken some time to breathe. What a weight off that was.
But then, today something happened that reminds me that we are never more than one quick turn from ruin. I was eating lunch an chatting with a coworker when I swallowed and the food lodged in my throat. I know the feeling well. A few years ago I ended up in the emergency room because a pill lodged so thoroughly that nothing would remove it. Finally it was surgically removed and my esophagus was dilated. I discovered that I have a stomach condition that burns my esophagus with stomach acid and scars it. Combined with a naturally narrow throat, this creates restrictions where food can easily lodge. I'm supposed to take medicine to stop the acid, but found the medicine and the anxiety associated with having to take medicine all the time were causing more discomfort than the acid problem, so my doctor advised that I stop taking it so frequently...which turned into rarely.
But today in one split moment, I was right back in that distress. I tried to drink, but the water wouldn't pass or move the food, so I ran to the bathroom and began retching and swallowing until it finally dislodged. It's a horrible feeling. I would almost rather block my wind and pass out quickly. So I am reminded now of those days following the surgery where everything I ate was a source of anxiety. Where I felt incomplete, broken. Where my previous delusionment of strength and self-sufficiency was shattered. I feel it must be a bit of what chronically ill people feel.
It even led to a bit of hypochondria where I was so afraid of what other major health issue I might be ignoring that every ailment had me hyper-examining myself and even going to the doctor to ensure I was ok.
But now it's back to the diet to reduce acid, back to the medicine. I'm trying hard to keep peace about it. To "be anxious for nothing..." But it's not easy for me. I am naturally bent that way.
The strange thing is that I am not in the least afraid of dying. In fact it makes many people uncomfortable to hear how much I am truly not afraid of it. For me it would be a blessing, an end to this life of anxiety and depression and fear and evil. I know that I will fall into rest in my Father's arms. I can't wait to step out of this flesh and gaze at the real world. How appropriate then that to break whatever pride or perversion is in me, I am given this cross of decidedly undeadly burden. I must face this anxious fear, this dread of medical pain and systematic torture. I could face a knife or bullet with ease, but to face probing, medical, prodding and pricking is terrifying to me.
This is yet another instance where I must decrease and let Christ increase in me. I am in myself less than a cripple because my cross is internal with little external sign. My struggles have no substance, no matter, therefore they are "insubstantial" and "don't matter". You see how even language degrades me? No one teases a visibly handicapped person, but when it is not visible, all manner of jokes are permissible. To be inwardly stricken is to be flawed by choice to most people. Why can't I just be normal. I hate the word. It has no real meaning. It is truly insubstantial. It is an abstract statistical term.
Therefore I want to wear my invisible crosses outwardly. I am willing to take scorn and disrespect, though it scares me and I crave approval. I know that my identity is not this flesh which tries to dominate in weaker moments. I know that I cannot change what I cannot change. I know that I am too weak even to change much of what I can change. Therefore I plead Christ. I am bound to him because he is the only source of hope I have found to be credible. If it is up to me, then I am already doomed. No "you're ok, I'm ok" claptrap will resolve this. No PMA. No universalism. Call me Christian and let my strength and identity be Christ.

Formidable Joy
At the heart of Contemplation is an openness to the Truth present in all circumstances. But we aren't always aware of it. An awareness often forces its way in on a Contemplative's thoughts like a wave crashing over him. You get used to it.
Today I was listening to The Big Roar by the Joy Formidable, a great band from Wales. The sound is rich and symphonic; the lyrics are deeply poetic. The music is evocative like liquid emotion.
While I was listening in the car a wave crashed over me and I realized that the album and the band name are touching a deep reality. Joy is a complex concept. It ranges from simple happiness for many people, to something much more mystic. The music is definitely joyful, but in a deeper darker way. For me joy is not happiness. This is circumstantial. Joy is not. I often feel like I don't have joy, but perhaps it is not something to have or not. Perhaps it is an ever-present existence which we can participate in like swimming. In this light, I dove into it and tried to see what was true there.
Happiness, sadness, anger, justice, all swirl around in joy. It could be dark and deep and cold or hot and light and quick. Or a mixture of them all. In this sense it is terribly formidable. Strange, wild, untamed, and scary like Bacchus without Aslan's presence.
Perhaps I don't lack it, but rather fear it and therefore stay in the shallows. God, that I will dive deep and let joy permeate me.
